National Team Dominates Slopes Worldwide

January 21, 2025

The team delivered an extraordinary set of performances this past weekend, with impressive results across multiple competitions. From the prestigious Laax Open in Switzerland to standout showings in Finland and Austria, Team Canada continues to prove they are a dominant force in snowboarding.

Back-to-Back Victories for Spalding

Cam Spalding stole the show on Saturday, winning the Laax Open men’s slopestyle event with a score of 86.63 points. This victory marks Spalding’s second consecutive slopestyle win of the season, following his triumph at the season opener in Cardrona. Spalding bested a strong field, finishing ahead of American Red Gerard (86.22) and German Noah Viktor (83.72).

Spalding’s victory adds his name to an elite list of Canadians who have won the Laax Open, joining Mark McMorris (2016), Max Parrot (2017), Sebastian Toutant (2019), and Liam Brearley (2024). With two of the five slopestyle competitions completed, Spalding now leads the discipline standings and sits second in the overall men’s FIS Park & Pipe standings behind Japan’s Taiga Hasegawa.

The Laax Open finals were packed with Canadian talent, with Eli Bouchard, Liam Brearley, and Cam Spalding all qualifying for the men’s slopestyle finals. Brearley, last year’s Laax champion, narrowly missed the podium with a fourth-place finish, while Bouchard placed 12th. On the women’s side, Laurie Blouin secured a strong sixth-place finish.

Para Team Dominates in Finland

Over in Pyhä, Finland, the Canadian Para National Team had a weekend to remember, earning four medals across the World Cup and Europa Cup events.

Alex "Bubs" Massie returned to the World Cup SBX circuit for the first time since 2022, clinching a silver medal in the LL2 World Cup.

Tyler Turner also secured a silver medal in the LL1 World Cup, showcasing exceptional skill in a tightly contested race.

On the Europa Cup side, Sandrine Hamel won silver, while Chase Nicklin added another gold medal to his growing collection after wins at Dubai’s Asia Cup and a podium finish at the Landgraaf Europa Cup.

Alpine Team Shines in Austria

The Canadian Alpine Snowboard Team also impressed under the lights at Bad Gastein, Austria. Ben Heldman achieved his first-ever top-8 World Cup finish, while Kaylie Buck secured a personal best with an 11th-place result. These performances highlight the team’s growth and potential as they move into the latter part of the season.

With only two more World Cups remaining before the alpine team's returns to Canada, excitement is building for the Shred The North World Cup series. The first stop, Légende Du Nord, VISA FIS Snowboard Alpine World Cup, will take place at Val Saint-Côme, Quebec, and promises to showcase Canada’s best riders on home soil.
