Cam Spalding has clinched his first World Cup win at the Winter Games NZ, Cardrona World Cup held in New Zealand. This thrilling victory marked the opening of the 2024/25 FIS Snowboard Park & Pipe season and set the tone for what promises to be an exhilarating year in competitive snowboarding.
Spalding's path to glory began with a standout performance in the qualifiers. His first-run score of 82.50 topped the standings and demonstrated his exceptional skill and precision.
The event week was plagued by challenging weather conditions, with a series of stormy days impacting the schedule. Persistent high winds and an overnight storm on Sunday, forced the closure of Cardrona's chairlifts on Monday causing the cancellation of the finals event.
The final results were determined based on the qualification scores, pushing Spalding’s first-run performance into his first World Cup win. Spalding’s podium win is a personal triumph and a significant milestone in his burgeoning career. His ability to perform at such a high level despite the weather-related obstacles further cements his status as one of the sport’s rising stars.
The cancellation of the finals also affected other members of the National Team who had qualified. Darcy Sharpe, who secured a spot in the finals with a seventh-place qualification, was unable to compete due to the event’s abrupt end. Meanwhile, Truth Smith, faced his own challenges. Smith broke his nose during one of his qualifying runs, and even though he had qualified for finals, was not cleared to compete even if the event had run.
As the season progresses, Cam Spalding’s victory at Cardrona sets a high benchmark for him and the National Team, he has undoubtedly positioned himself as a formidable contender for the rest of the World Cup season and into this Olympic Qualifying year.
Congratulations to Cam Spalding on a spectacular start to the 2024/25 FIS Snowboard Park & Pipe season.
