Sandrine Hamel Does the Dew, takes home bronze medal at Dew Tour

December 14, 2018

Sandrine Hamel (St. Sauveur, QC) took home the bronze medal Thursday afternoon at the Dew Tour Adaptive Banked Slalom. This was Hamel’s first ever Dew Tour appearance, and the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympian had to overcome some major adversity to reach the podium.

Battling altitude sickness, the 21 year old only had one inspection run, missed training, and was cleared to compete by Dew Tour Medical staff minutes before the competition.

Unlike in World Para Snowboard competitions, competitiors were sorted into one group per gender, which made for a highly competitive field. Hamel’s first run time of 51.58s was enough to put her behind the USA’s Brenna Huckaby (45.82s) and Amy Purdy (48.21s). Michelle Salt (Calgary, AB) just missed the podium in 4th.

On the men’s side, Alex Massie (Barrie, ON) came in 6th, with John Leslie (Arnprior, ON) finishing just behind him in 7th.
