Have any of your relatives played sport at a high level?
My mom was a field hockey player and took part in Canada Games. She also coached Special Olympics.

Why and how did you start snowboarding?
My parents have always been involved in sports. They gave me the opportunity to try out lots of different sports. We were skiing since were little, and then when we were 12, my brother saw snowboarding on the slopes and decided to give it a try. I also picked up skateboarding when I was 12, snow it was kind of the winter version of skateboarding. That’s what we did and my brothers have been pushing me ever since.

My whole family now snowboard, even though my mom just turned 60... She curls, she kayak, she just tried surfing...

What is your first memory of snowboarding?
The first time, I couldn’t figure out how to put the bindings. We just had rentals from the local Martock hill. I just put the boots on, and they were the biggest thing I had ever since.

Who has had the most influence on your snowboarding career and why?
Probably Tom Hutchinson. When I was a development rider, he convinced me to try out some World Cups. I had a bunch of coaches before the national team. There wasn’t a lot of snowboarding in NS, so our coach couldn’t do a lot.

I didn’t really ride a lot with Alex (Duckworth), we kind of missed each other...

What is the most memorable moment you had in your career?
At the 2008 World Cup in Stoneham. I was second on the day of my my birthday, so that was a good birthday present. John (my brother) was there to cheer on, as well as my parents. They don’t get to see me compete all that often, so it was neat to see them come and watch. I guess it does motivate me to know that they are watching... Walking in the stadium in Torino was pretty awesome too...

Do you currently support a charity of any kind?
I do a lot of talking back home. In 2006, I was the only Nova Scotian to go to the Games so it was a pretty big deal back home. I talked to a lot of school about the Olympics.

Also, me and my couple of friends started up an award for Joel Boylan, a former rider in Nova Scotia who died from a car accident in 2005. The award goes to someone who is a good role model who tries to push it and outlined what Joel had to go through. Back home, we don’t have the name and the track that all the riders do have so you’re expected to travel and do everything that everyone else does. So 500 dollars can go a long way...

NDLR: The Joel Boylan award was created to honor and remember one of this province’s most distinguished riders. It is presented to a local snowboarder who displays a positive attitude, a need for funding and a promising future in snowboarding. This award is available to any freestyle athlete at the provincial level who is a member of the Nova Scotia Snowboard Association

Do you do competitive sports other than snowboarding?
I skateboard in the summer. I am dangerous for people around. I do some wakeboard.... Anything with a board on it!

Did you win any awards? If yes, which ones?
2006 – Nova Scotia Athlete of the year. That’s a pretty big award for us. Alex won it the year before me, so to have two snowboarders in two years in a row is pretty cool.

How would you describe your style of snowboarding?
I think I am a smooth rider who likes to go big.

What is your highest level of education?
High school. Prince Andrew High School in Dartmouth, NS

Do you play a musical instrument?
Does Rock Band counts? If so, I play the guitar!!

Favourite musical type?
Lots of hip hop, I like alternative too. I like to mix it up.

What music do you listen on race or contest day?
Upbeat stuff. I don’t actually ride with the music.

Favourite band of all time?
I don’t really have a favourite band.

Favourite food/meal?
Pasta.

Favourite World Cup region/location to compete?
Chilie. Valle Nevada is awesome...

Favourite travel/touristic destination?
Chili, again.

Who’s your snowboarding hero/favourite snowboarder?
I guess I better say Alex.... Natasha Burguess is one that I’ve grown up too.

Who’s your hero (actor, athlete, etc)?
I don’t know...

Do you have any hobbies?
I’m really bored when I don’t ride.
