Changes to the CSCP - 2011-2012 Season
Competition Introduction (formerly 'Basic Coach')
The Comp Intro Course now requires both NCCP Part A & B to be completed before a coach can obtain ‘Trained’ status. Coaches at this level will now be required to further their coaching education and have two years to become ‘Certified’ at the Comp Intro level.
Completing certification involves completing a Portfolio and an In-Training Evaluation.
1. Portfolio – At Comp Intro level a coach must submit a practice plan, an emergency action plan and a communications plan/sample program letter.
2. In-training Evaluation - The Coach is evaluated working with their athletes throughout a full season by a mentor coach/evaluator. A debrief is completed and suggestions for improvements are made.
Why the changes?
The changes were made to better ensure that our CSCP trained coaches are fully prepared for the demands put upon them by working in or running a club/program. Although there are now extra steps to achieve Certification, coaches are offered development and assistance to better them as a coach beyond the three day course.
Comp Intro Advanced
With the Comp Intro Course now falling under the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) umbrella of ‘Competitive Introduction Context’ with the new evaluation piece, the CSCP Comp-Intro Course needed a more defined name. The context is now called ‘Comp-Intro Advanced’ – new name, same amazing result. The program underwent some major review of material this summer and is ready to better prepare our coaches.

The CSCP’s plan for long term coaching development has been created in conjunction with the National Coach Certification Program (NCCP) and is based on Canada~Snowboard’s Long Term Athlete Development Model (VISION 2020).
*Further, CSCP has adopted this Code of Ethics (.pdf 154KB) from the Coaches of Canada.
The CSCP recognizes the new NCCP’s approach of competency based education training to provide for more competent coaches by conducting training using modern adult education principles such as facilitated learning, self-directed modules, and the evaluation of both coaches and facilitators. In workshops or modules delivered in person, the overall teaching format will be based on mentorship and facilitation of learning by participants. Competency-based education and training is founded on the concept of learning by doing. Coaches develop and refine their skills when they are given the opportunity to apply the concepts. The workshops are designed to allow participants to practice the core skills required in each coaching context and to enable them to reflect on how they may apply what they have learned in their own programs.
The CSCP’s Coaching Development Model provides five contexts for the development of snowboard coaches:
- Comp Intro (formally Basic Coach) - LTAD Stage 3
- Comp Intro Advanced Coach - LTAD Stage 4
- Competition Development Coach - LTAD Stage 5
- Competition Development Advanced Coach - LTAD Stage 6
- High Performance Coach - LTAD Stage 6/7
These are described in detail in the CSCP Operations Manual (.pdf 377KB) as well as the workshop details page of this website.

The practice of qualifying for a CSCP license on the basis of previous completion of a CASI coaching course (i.e. “grandfathering”) has been discontinued. As of 01 September, 2009.
